1Tube: music on screen, from Bohemian Rhapsody and Whiplash to Coco, La Vie en Rose and KPop Demon Hunters
1Tube began in the middle of the 2010s as a video streaming cloud with a simple promise on its front page: store your videos and watch them from everywhere on every device. Its pages followed the classic tube layout of the time, with a white header, a wide search box, a sidebar of grey links and grids of thumbnails with little black time badges. Its menus pointed to the newest streams, the top one hundred streams and a music chart. 1Tube returns with that familiar tube look and a clear new purpose built from its music menu. It is a streaming guide to music on screen: music biopics, musicals, dance films, concert films, music documentaries, animated music adventures and music series, each with a Watch now button that opens it on the official services in your country.
Music and film have always belonged together. A great soundtrack can lift a story into the sky, and a great story can send a song around the world. 1Tube gathers the films and series where music sits at the heart of the story, from the lives of legendary singers to the dreams of young drummers, dancers and choir singers, and from sold-out stadium concerts to small bands rehearsing in a garage.
The 1Tube design
The archived capture of 1tube.to from August 2016 preserves the home page and its main style sheet, and both were measured with care. The page used a light grey background, a white header fixed to the top of the screen with a thin grey rule beneath it, a logo area on the left, a wide search box with a grey button, and three buttons on the right: an outlined button, a bright red one and a calm blue one. Below, a white sidebar listed its sections in grey Lato type that turned a clear blue on hover. Video thumbnails were cut in the wide sixteen by nine shape, each with a small black badge in the corner for the running time and a dark overlay with a play arrow that appeared under the pointer. The player page had a dark charcoal list of up-next videos beside the screen.
This 1Tube keeps every one of those details. The colours come straight from the measured style sheet: the light grey page, the white header and sidebar, the red of the old Premium button, the blue of the old Login button, the blue of the hover states and the charcoal of the player list. The logo is original, a red rounded screen with a white play arrow followed by the 1tube name in dark grey and blue.
The header
The header stays fixed at the top of every page. On the left sits a menu button and the 1Tube logo, which always leads home. In the middle is the wide search box, ready for a film title, a series, a singer, a band or a director. On the right sit three buttons in the spirit of the original: an outlined My List button, a red Top rated button and a blue Help button. On a phone the header slims down to the menu button and the logo, and the menu opens a panel with the search box and every section.
The featured player
The home page opens with a featured player: a large black screen showing a backdrop from the film of the moment, with a big play button in the centre and the title along the bottom. Beside it, a charcoal up-next list shows five more featured titles with small thumbnails, exactly like the related videos beside the player of the old site. Today the featured titles include Bohemian Rhapsody, KPop Demon Hunters, Whiplash, A Complete Unknown, Coco and La Vie en Rose, a fair sample of how widely 1Tube travels. Press the screen or any title in the list to open its page.
The intro box
Below the player, a white intro box explains what 1Tube is in two sentences and offers four quick chips: Biopics, Musicals, Concerts and Docs, and World music. The chips turn blue under the pointer and open each collection directly, which makes them the fastest way into the catalogue on a first visit.
Rows of thumbnails
The rest of the home page is made of rows of thumbnails, one row for each of the main collections: Newest streams, Top rated, Music biopics, Musicals, Concerts and Docs, Music series, Animated and World music. Each row has a heading with a More streams link on the right. Every thumbnail is a wide backdrop with a black badge in the bottom corner. For films the badge shows the running time in the classic hours, minutes and seconds style, such as 2:15:00 for Bohemian Rhapsody or 1:47:00 for Whiplash. For series it shows the number of seasons. Point at a thumbnail and a dark overlay with a white play arrow appears, just as on the original site.
Below each thumbnail sits the title in dark grey, turning blue under the pointer, and a small grey line with the year, the main genre and the rating. On a laptop the rows show four thumbnails side by side, on a tablet three and on a phone two.
The title page
Every film and series on 1Tube has its own page with the poster, the title, the year, the running time, the original language, the genres and the rating, followed by the story, the cast and the director. Series pages add every season and episode with air dates. Next to the poster sits the country selector and the Watch now button, which opens the title on JustWatch for the country you choose. The how to watch guide walks through each step.
Music biopics
The biopic is one of the most popular kinds of music film, and 1Tube gathers the best of them. Bohemian Rhapsody follows Freddie Mercury and Queen from their early days to the famous Live Aid concert of 1985, with Rami Malek in an Oscar-winning performance. Rocketman tells the story of Elton John as a dazzling musical fantasy, with Taron Egerton singing the songs himself. Elvis is Baz Luhrmann's whirlwind portrait of Elvis Presley and his manager Colonel Tom Parker, with Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. Better Man tells the life of Robbie Williams with a playful twist: the singer appears on screen as a computer-animated chimpanzee.
American roots music has inspired some of the finest biopics. Walk the Line follows Johnny Cash and June Carter, with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, who won an Oscar for the role. A Complete Unknown follows the young Bob Dylan in the folk clubs of New York in the early 1960s, with Timothée Chalamet. Ray follows Ray Charles, with Jamie Foxx in an Oscar-winning performance, and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom brings the Mother of the Blues to a Chicago recording studio in 1927, with Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman.
Hip-hop has its own great biopics. Straight Outta Compton tells the story of N.W.A, the group that changed rap in the late 1980s, and All Eyez on Me follows Tupac Shakur. Bob Marley: One Love follows the reggae legend in the years around his album Exodus, and Maestro follows the conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia, with Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan. The music biopics guide gathers them by style.
French song on screen
France has a rich tradition of music biopics. La Vie en Rose follows Édith Piaf from the streets of Belleville to the great concert halls, and Marion Cotillard won the Oscar for best actress for the role. Monsieur Aznavour follows Charles Aznavour, with Tahar Rahim, and Dalida follows the singer born in Cairo who became a star in France. My Way follows Claude François, the pop star who co-wrote the French song that became My Way. Aline is a warm and affectionate fantasy inspired by the life of Céline Dion, directed by and starring Valérie Lemercier.
Young musicians and big dreams
Some of the most thrilling music films follow young musicians chasing a dream. Whiplash follows a young jazz drummer at a New York conservatory and the ferocious teacher who pushes him to the limit, with an Oscar-winning J.K. Simmons. Sing Street follows a Dublin teenager in the 1980s who starts a band to impress a girl, and its original songs are irresistible. CODA follows the only hearing member of a deaf fishing family, a girl with a remarkable singing voice, and it won the Oscar for best picture. The Bélier Family, the French film that inspired it, tells a similar story on a French farm.
Sound of Metal follows a heavy metal drummer who begins to lose his hearing, with a remarkable performance by Riz Ahmed. August Rush follows a gifted orphan who hears music everywhere in New York. The Soloist follows a journalist and a brilliant musician living on the streets of Los Angeles. Begin Again follows a songwriter and a record producer who record an album across the streets and rooftops of New York, and Inside Llewyn Davis follows a folk singer through a cold week in Greenwich Village in 1961.
Stars on the rise
Stories about fame are a genre of their own. A Star Is Born follows a seasoned rock star and the young singer he discovers, with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, whose song Shallow won the Oscar. 8 Mile follows a young rapper in Detroit, with Eminem in a role close to his own story, and its song Lose Yourself also won an Oscar. Almost Famous follows a teenage music journalist on tour with a rock band in 1973, and That Thing You Do! follows a small-town band with one great hit in 1964, written and directed by Tom Hanks.
Crazy Heart follows a weary country singer, with Jeff Bridges in an Oscar-winning role, and Music and Lyrics pairs Hugh Grant as a former pop star with Drew Barrymore as his unexpected songwriting partner. The Idea of You is a romance between a single mother and the young singer of a famous boy band, and Marry Me follows a pop superstar played by Jennifer Lopez who marries a stranger from the crowd.
Musicals
The musical is the purest form of music on screen, where the characters sing their feelings. Moulin Rouge! is Baz Luhrmann's dazzling Paris musical built from famous pop songs, with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Dreamgirls follows a trio of soul singers in the 1960s, with Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx and an Oscar-winning Jennifer Hudson. tick, tick... BOOM! follows Jonathan Larson, the composer of Rent, as he races to finish a musical before his thirtieth birthday, with Andrew Garfield and direction by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Rock of Ages is a jukebox musical on the Sunset Strip of 1987.
For families, High School Musical started a phenomenon in 2006, and The Muppet Christmas Carol is a beloved holiday classic with Michael Caine as Scrooge. Camp Rock and Hannah Montana: The Movie are bright Disney musicals, and KPop Demon Hunters is a joyful animated musical about a K-pop girl group who protect the world from demons with their songs. The musicals guide has more.
Music series
Television has embraced music too, and 1Tube gathers the best music series. Schmigadoon! follows a couple trapped in a magical town where everyone lives inside a classic musical, and Galavant is a comic fairy-tale musical with songs by Alan Menken. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend follows a lawyer who moves across the country for love, with original songs in every episode. Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist follows a coder who suddenly hears people's thoughts as songs.
Julie and the Phantoms follows a teenager who forms a band with three ghosts, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series follows students staging the famous show at the school where it was filmed, and The Get Down follows young people in the South Bronx of 1977 as hip-hop is born. Nashville follows country stars in the music capital of Tennessee over six seasons, Mozart in the Jungle follows a young oboist in a New York symphony orchestra, and Selena: The Series follows the Tejano star and her family.
Concert films
A concert film puts you in the best seat in the house. HOMECOMING: A film by Beyoncé captures Beyoncé's celebrated 2018 Coachella performance, with its marching band, dancers and months of preparation. This Is It gathers rehearsal footage of Michael Jackson preparing for his London shows in 2009. ariana grande: excuse me, i love you follows Ariana Grande's Sweetener tour on stage in London.
K-pop fans have a whole shelf of concert films. BTS: Permission to Dance on Stage - LA captures BTS at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, BTS WORLD TOUR [LOVE YOURSELF] in Seoul captures them at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, and BTS: Yet to Come in Cinemas is a cinema cut of their concert in Busan. From Latin America, Morat: Balas Perdidas captures the Colombian band on stage, and Soy Luna: Live Concert brings the Disney series to a big arena.
Music documentaries
Music documentaries tell the stories behind the songs. Amy is Asif Kapadia's moving portrait of Amy Winehouse, built from home videos and recordings, and it won the Oscar for best documentary. Searching for Sugar Man follows two South African fans looking for the mysterious American singer Rodriguez, and it won the same Oscar. What Happened, Miss Simone? follows Nina Simone from child piano prodigy to civil rights voice, and Cobain: Montage of Heck draws on Kurt Cobain's own notebooks and tapes.
Pop stars open their lives in Miss Americana with Taylor Swift, Gaga: Five Foot Two with Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry with Billie Eilish and Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me with Selena Gomez. The Greatest Night in Pop tells the story of the single night in January 1985 when dozens of stars recorded We Are the World. The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years follows the Beatles on tour from 1963 to 1966, directed by Ron Howard. BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky and Break the Silence: The Movie follow two of the biggest groups in K-pop, and Karol G: Tomorrow Was Beautiful follows the Colombian superstar on her stadium tour. The concerts and docs guide gathers them together.
Dance films
Dance films are music you can see. Step Up began a popular series with Channing Tatum as a young man who finds his place at a Baltimore arts school, and Step Up 2: The Streets, Step Up Revolution and Step Up All In carried it through Baltimore, Miami and Las Vegas. Honey follows a hip-hop choreographer in New York, Save the Last Dance follows a ballet dancer who discovers hip-hop in Chicago, and Footloose follows a newcomer to a small Southern town where dancing has been banned.
Billy Elliot follows an eleven-year-old boy in a mining town during the 1984 strike who discovers a passion for ballet, and it later became a stage musical with music by Elton John. Ballerina is an animated adventure about an orphan girl in nineteenth-century Paris who dreams of dancing at the Opera, and Let's Dance follows a French hip-hop dancer who teaches at a ballet school. The dance guide has the full list.
Animated music adventures
Animation and music are natural partners. Coco follows a boy in Mexico who journeys into the Land of the Dead during the Day of the Dead, and its song Remember Me won the Oscar. Soul follows a jazz pianist who gets a second chance to find his spark, with music by Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Sing and Sing 2 follow a koala who puts on singing shows with a cast of animal performers, and Trolls World Tour and Trolls Band Together follow Poppy and Branch through worlds of different musical styles.
Fantasia 2000 sets short animated films to classical music, from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. From Japan, Belle follows a shy girl who becomes a singing star in a vast virtual world, Blue Giant follows a young saxophonist who dreams of becoming the world's greatest jazz player, and Inu-Oh is a rock opera set in fourteenth-century Japan. One Piece Film Red brings a pop superstar into the world of Luffy and his crew, and K-ON! The Movie takes a high school band on a trip to London.
Music comedies
Music and laughter go together beautifully. The School of Rock stars Jack Black as a guitarist who poses as a substitute teacher and turns his class into a rock band. Sister Act stars Whoopi Goldberg as a lounge singer hiding in a convent who transforms the nuns' choir, and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit takes her to a school choir with a young Lauryn Hill. Pitch Perfect follows a college a cappella group, and Pitch Perfect 2 and Pitch Perfect 3 carry the Barden Bellas to world championships and a USO tour.
Wayne's World and Wayne's World 2 follow two rock-loving friends and their public-access show, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny follows Jack Black and Kyle Gass on a quest for a legendary guitar pick, and Yesterday imagines a world where only one struggling musician remembers the songs of the Beatles. Bill & Ted Face the Music reunites Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter for one last time-travelling rock adventure.
Love stories with a soundtrack
Romance and music have always danced together. Begin Again and Sing Street, both from the Irish director John Carney, are love letters to songwriting. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist follows two music lovers through one night of New York gigs, and Another Cinderella Story retells the fairy tale with dance. I Still Believe tells the true story of the Christian singer Jeremy Camp and his first wife, and Forever My Girl follows a country star who returns to his hometown. Chico & Rita is an animated love story between a pianist and a singer from 1940s Havana to New York, and Wish You is a gentle Korean romance between a singer and a keyboard player.
Korean music films
Korea's music industry is one of the most famous in the world, and its films celebrate it. Beyond the concert films of BTS, Burn the Stage: The Movie and Bring the Soul: The Movie go behind the scenes of their world tours, and BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky follows the four members of Blackpink from their training years to Coachella. Miss Granny is a joyful comedy about a grandmother who magically becomes twenty again and becomes the singer of her grandson's band. The Sound of Magic is a musical series about a magician in an abandoned amusement park, and Hymn of Death tells the true story of Korea's first soprano in the 1920s.
Japanese music films
Japan brings a special energy to music on screen. Swing Girls follows a group of schoolgirls who form a big band after an accident sidelines the school brass band, and Linda Linda Linda follows a schoolgirl band rushing to learn a punk song for the school festival, with Bae Doona as a Korean exchange student. Liz and the Blue Bird follows two friends in a school wind band, The Anthem of the Heart follows a girl who finds her voice through a school musical, and The Piano Forest follows two young pianists with very different gifts. Given follows a young rock band, Lu Over the Wall follows a boy and a singing mermaid, and Revue Starlight is a dazzling musical anime series about a stage school.
French music films
French cinema has given the world some of its best-loved music films. The Chorus follows a music teacher who forms a choir at a boarding school for troubled boys in 1949, and its songs became best-sellers across Europe. The Marching Band follows a famous conductor who discovers he has a brother who plays trombone in a small northern brass band. Marguerite follows a wealthy woman in 1920s Paris who loves to sing opera, and The Page Turner is an elegant thriller set around a piano recital. Tenor follows a young rapper from the Paris suburbs who discovers a talent for opera, and Eden follows a young DJ through twenty years of French house music.
French comedies celebrate pop idols too: Podium follows a bank manager who returns to the stage as an impersonator of Claude François, Jean-Philippe imagines a world where Johnny Hallyday stayed an ordinary man named Jean-Philippe Smet, and Leave One Day is a charming musical about a chef who returns to her hometown and her old songs. The Suicide Shop is a darkly funny animated musical by Patrice Leconte.
Spain and Latin America
The Spanish-speaking world has a deep love of song, and its films show it. I'm Gilda follows the Argentine singer Gilda, whose cumbia songs made her a folk heroine, with Natalia Oreiro. Out of the Clear Blue Sky is a Mexican comedy in which the legendary singer Pedro Infante returns to Earth as his own impersonator. The (Almost) Legends follows two Mexican half-brothers who reunite in their colourful home town to honour their father's memory. Disco, Ibiza, Locomía tells the story of the flamboyant Spanish pop group of the 1980s, and Voy a pasármelo bien is a joyful Spanish musical built on the songs of Hombres G.
Quién te cantará is a haunting Spanish drama about a famous singer who loses her memory before a comeback. My Big Night is a wild comedy set during the recording of a New Year's television special, with the veteran Spanish singer Raphael. For younger viewers, Tini: The New Life of Violetta, Soy Luna: The Last Concert and BIA: An Upside Down World continue much-loved Disney Channel stories from Latin America, and Turu, the Wacky Hen is an animated musical for small children.
Indian music films
Music is at the heart of Indian cinema, and 1Tube gathers films where it takes centre stage. Gully Boy follows a young man from the Dharavi neighbourhood of Mumbai who finds his voice as a rapper, with Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, inspired by the real street rappers of the city. Rockstar follows a college student who becomes a troubled rock star, with Ranbir Kapoor and music by A. R. Rahman. Secret Superstar follows a teenage girl who becomes an online singing sensation while hiding her face, with Aamir Khan as a flamboyant music producer. Saiyaara is a recent romance between a singer and a lyricist that became one of the biggest Hindi hits of 2025.
World music at a glance
The World music collection gathers every film and series on 1Tube from Korea, Japan, France, Spain, Latin America and India in one place. It is the perfect starting point for a musical journey around the globe: a French choir film one evening, a Japanese jazz anime the next, then a Mexican comedy and a Bollywood romance. The world music guide picks highlights from each country.
Subtitles and song lyrics
Many of the best music films come from outside the English-speaking world, and subtitles open the door to all of them. The major streaming services offer subtitles in dozens of languages, and many subtitle the song lyrics too, so you can follow every verse of a French chanson or a K-pop anthem. Every title page on 1Tube shows the original language before you press Watch now. The subtitles guide explains how to switch subtitles and audio tracks on in the most popular apps.
Sound at home
Music films reward good sound. A pair of headphones, a soundbar or a simple set of speakers makes a big difference, bringing out the thunder of a stadium crowd in a concert film or the delicate notes of a piano in a quiet drama. Many services offer music films in surround sound and in 4K, and the rental versions from the big digital stores often include the best audio.
How Watch now works
Every title page has a country selector and a Watch now button. When you press it, 1Tube opens the title's page on JustWatch for the country you picked. JustWatch is a well-known streaming guide that tracks which services carry each film and series in each country, and it lists them clearly: subscription services, services where you can buy or rent the title, and free services with adverts. Pick the one you prefer and the title opens there, in that service's own player. Streaming rights change often, especially for concert films, which is why 1Tube checks JustWatch each time.
The services behind the guide
The titles on 1Tube play on official services. Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, Max and Paramount+ carry many of them, depending on your country, and Disney+ is home to many of the family musicals and concert films. Apple TV, Google TV and Prime Video rent and sell most films. Regional services carry many French, Spanish, Latin American, Korean, Japanese and Indian titles. The services guide gives a short tour.
Free ways to watch
Plenty of music films can be watched at zero cost through legal services. Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel and Freevee carry many films free with adverts, depending on your country, and library services such as Kanopy and Hoopla carry music documentaries free with a library card in some regions. When you press Watch now and choose your country, JustWatch shows the free options beside the paid ones. The free music films guide has the details.
Apps and devices
1Tube works in every modern browser on phones, tablets and computers, and you can add it to the home screen of your phone for one-tap access, much as the original site offered its own apps. The films themselves play in each service's official app, available from Google Play, the App Store, your games console or your smart TV's app store. Streaming sticks and boxes such as Fire TV, Google TV, Apple TV and Roku run the same apps, and you can cast from a phone to a television in a couple of taps. The apps and devices guide covers each one.
My List
My List is where you keep the films you want to watch and follow the series you are watching. Press Add to My List on any title page to save it. On the season pages of a series, mark the episode you reached, which is handy for long series such as Nashville, and the next time you return you will see exactly where you left off.
Your list is stored in this browser on this device, private to you and ready the moment you open 1Tube, with zero accounts to create. Moving to a new phone or laptop takes two clicks: export the list as a small file, then import it on the new device. The My List guide walks through it, and the My List button in the header opens your list from any page.
Finding a title
There are several ways to find a title on 1Tube. The search box in the header accepts titles, original titles, actors, bands and directors, so you can type Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen or Rami Malek and reach the same film. Press Enter for the full results page, where you can filter by type, genre and year. The sidebar and the rows on the home page are ideal for browsing, and the A-Z index lists every title in alphabetical order. The finding a title guide has more tips.
The official 1Tube site
The official 1Tube site is easy to recognise: a light grey page, a white header with the red play logo and a wide search box, outlined, red and blue buttons, a white sidebar of grey links, a black featured player with a charcoal up-next list and rows of wide thumbnails with black running-time badges. Every Watch now button leads to JustWatch, and from there to the official services. Bookmark the home page or add it to your phone's home screen to keep the right address close. The official site guide describes it in detail.
Streaming safely
A few simple habits keep streaming safe and pleasant. Install service apps only from Google Play, the App Store or your television's own app store. Give each streaming service its own strong password and switch on two-step sign-in where it is offered. Before you pay for anything, check that the address bar shows the real name of the service. 1Tube sends you to JustWatch, and JustWatch sends you to each official service, so every step of the journey stays on trusted ground. The safety guide has a short checklist.
Is 1Tube working?
If a page seems slow, a quick check usually settles it. Open the home page, then any title page. If both load, 1Tube is up and running. A refresh, a cleared browser cache, another browser or another network fixes most slow pages. Because the films play on the streaming services, questions about playback belong with each service's help centre. The site status guide lists the simple fixes in order.
Privacy
1Tube keeps things light. My List and your episode marks stay in your own browser, and your chosen country is remembered there too, so the next Watch now press is quicker. Posters, backdrops and production details come from TMDB, the community-built film and television database, and every Watch now link goes to JustWatch. The privacy page sets it all out in plain words.
How the catalogue is chosen
The 1Tube catalogue is chosen by hand for music lovers. It gathers music biopics, musicals, dance films, concert films, music documentaries, animated music adventures and music series from Hollywood, Britain, Ireland, France, Spain, Latin America, India, Korea and Japan, from the early 1990s to 2025. Each title is chosen because music sits at the heart of its story. The catalogue focuses on titles for a broad audience, so sex-led and explicit films are left to other guides, and every title on 1Tube is one you can recommend to a friend with confidence.
Music through the decades
The decade collections show how music films have changed. The 1990s bring Sister Act, Wayne's World, The Doors and That Thing You Do!. The 2000s bring Moulin Rouge!, 8 Mile, Walk the Line, Ray, La Vie en Rose and High School Musical. The 2010s bring Whiplash, Coco, Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman and Sing Street, and the newest streams bring A Complete Unknown, Better Man, KPop Demon Hunters and The Marching Band.
Top rated
The Top rated collection lists the highest-scoring music films and series in the catalogue, each with a strong score from hundreds of viewers or more. Whiplash, Coco and Soul sit near the top, alongside Bohemian Rhapsody, CODA, Sing Street and The Chorus, and fans have given the BTS concert films and Julie and the Phantoms glowing scores too. It is the quickest way to find a title that almost everyone enjoys.
Your first visit
On your first visit, start with the featured player and the rows below it. Pick a thumbnail that catches your eye, check the running time on its badge, read the story on the title page and press Watch now. If you enjoy it, open the sidebar and explore the collection it belongs to. Within a few weeks you will have a list of favourite music films to share with friends, and perhaps a few new artists on your playlist.
A music film night
For a perfect music film night, try a double bill. Pair a biopic with a documentary about the same world, such as Walk the Line and A Complete Unknown for American folk and country, or Bohemian Rhapsody and The Greatest Night in Pop for the great pop stars of the 1980s. Pair a young musician's story with a concert, such as Whiplash and Blue Giant for jazz, or Sing Street and Linda Linda Linda for school bands on two sides of the world.
Family sing-alongs
Music films are made for family evenings. Coco, Sing, Sing 2, KPop Demon Hunters and Trolls World Tour bring bright colours and catchy songs, The Muppet Christmas Carol is perfect for December, and The School of Rock and Sister Act will have everyone clapping along. For older children, High School Musical, Camp Rock and Julie and the Phantoms are favourites. Each title page shows the genres, so you can pick the right one for your household.
Learning from the screen
Music films can inspire you to pick up an instrument yourself. Whiplash and Sound of Metal show the dedication of a drummer, Blue Giant the joy of a saxophone, The Piano Forest and The Page Turner the discipline of the piano, and The Chorus and Pitch Perfect the magic of singing together. Many of the actors learned to play or sing for their roles, and the stories behind the scenes are often as inspiring as the films themselves.
Rock legends
Rock and roll has inspired films as loud and colourful as the music itself. The Doors is Oliver Stone's portrait of Jim Morrison, with Val Kilmer in a famously intense performance. Cobain: Montage of Heck brings Kurt Cobain's sketches, diaries and home recordings to life with animation. Almost Famous captures the thrill of a 1970s rock tour through the eyes of a teenage fan, and Rock of Ages turns the power ballads of the 1980s into a big, bright musical. Saturn Return follows the Spanish indie band Los Planetas as they record a make-or-break album.
Hip-hop on screen
Hip-hop is one of the great stories of modern music, and 1Tube follows it from its birth to today. The Get Down begins in the South Bronx of 1977, where DJs and young rappers were inventing a new sound. Straight Outta Compton follows N.W.A in Los Angeles in the late 1980s, All Eyez on Me follows Tupac Shakur, and 8 Mile and Get Rich or Die Tryin' follow young rappers in Detroit and New York. Hip-hop travels the world in Gully Boy in Mumbai and Tenor in the suburbs of Paris, and dance crews carry it through the Step Up films.
Classical and jazz
Classical music and jazz have their own shelf on 1Tube. Maestro follows Leonard Bernstein, TÁR follows a fictional conductor at the top of the classical world, with Cate Blanchett, and Mozart in the Jungle follows the players and conductor of a New York orchestra with warmth and humour. Marguerite is a tender comedy about a singer with a big heart and a wobbly voice, and Fantasia 2000 turns classical pieces into animated short films. For jazz, Whiplash, Soul, Blue Giant and Chico & Rita each capture the joy of improvisation in a different way, and Swing Girls shows a group of schoolgirls falling in love with big band swing.
K-pop and J-pop
K-pop fans will find a whole corner of 1Tube devoted to their favourites, from the BTS concert and documentary films to BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky and the animated hit KPop Demon Hunters, whose songs climbed the real music charts. J-pop and anime music shine in Belle, One Piece Film Red and K-ON! The Movie, and Revue Starlight brings the glamour of Japanese musical theatre to anime.
A music weekend
For a whole weekend of music on screen, try this plan. On Friday night, start with something joyful and short, such as Sing Street or The School of Rock. On Saturday afternoon, settle in with a big biopic such as Elvis or Rocketman, then turn the lights down for a concert film such as HOMECOMING: A film by Beyoncé. On Sunday, travel the world with The Chorus, Belle and Gully Boy, and end the weekend with a documentary such as Amy or Searching for Sugar Man. Save everything you plan to watch in My List, and the next weekend will be even easier to plan. The running-time badges on the thumbnails help you fit each title into the time you have, from a quick ninety minutes to an epic evening.
The story of 1Tube
The name 1Tube first appeared on 1tube.to, a video streaming cloud with apps, a partner programme and a language menu that reached from German and English to Turkish, Arabic, Hindi, Japanese and Korean. Its home page invited visitors to store their videos in the cloud and watch them from everywhere on every device, and its menus pointed to the newest streams, the top streams and a music chart. This new 1Tube keeps that tube look, with the white header, the grey sidebar and the thumbnails with their black time badges, and turns the music chart into a full guide to music on screen, each title linked to the services that carry it officially.
A growing playlist
1Tube grows like a good playlist. New music biopics, concert films and documentaries arrive every year, and new seasons of music series bring fresh episodes. As they appear, they join the Newest streams row at the top of the home page and the collections in the sidebar, each with its running time, its story and its Watch now button. Come back whenever you want something new to hear as well as to see, and let the thumbnails lead you from one great soundtrack to the next.
